I just realized I never introduced myself or our company.
My name is Gary Hall and I have been working in the internet marketing field since 1999. My first venture was building a manual search engine called GetExactly.com. We eventually branched away from manual search and became the largest affiliate marketing company in Denver, Colorado.
I left GetExactly to serve a two year full time mission for my church in Tijuana, Mexico. I am now fluent in Spanish although my business vocabulary is not what it should be. I returned to the states and married my better half. She is venturing into the blogging world with a recipes for kids blog.
I worked for one of the top local internet marketing companies and learned all about local SEO. After a while I started feeling the entrepreneurial urge and I moved back to beautiful Denver, Colorado! I grew up near Denver and I was so excited to be back! I worked out a deal with DeanArrow, and a few weeks later we launched InternetMarketingSpecialistsDenver.com a branch of DeanArrow focused on bringing the highest quality search engine optimization to the Denver Metro Area!
We truly are Denver’s Internet Marketing Specialists. Dean Arrow having been a website development company in the Denver area for over 15 years was a great fit for me. Many people ask me what they can do to get better rankings on the search engines. After I explain everything that Search Engine Optimization entails they inevitably say something along the lines of “But I thought it was just… you know… keywords and stuff.”
After the ump-teen time I came up with a list of the top 10 things an SEO newb can do.
- URL – If you have not bought one yet try and get a domain name that has your keywords in it.
- Title Tag – This is probably the most important place to put your keywords on your website. Your title can be found at the top of the browser next to the “e’ if you use explorer or the “firefox” symbol if you are using Mozilla. Note: If it says “Home” you are a newb!
- Meta Keywords – If you have stuffed these tags with a thousand keyword hopping to get Google to like you… you are a newb. Google has de-valuated the meta keyword tag and it means almost nothing, so try and keep it down to about 8 solid keywords that all relate to one theme.
- Keyword Density – Make sure to mention your keywords on your homepage. If you have a huge list of keywords at the bottom of your page or hidden in the background… Your a Newb! This is a black hat (bad) SEO practice called keyword stuffing and can get you penalized.
- Static Pages – When you make a new page make sure it is not using a Dynamic URL, and put your keywords in the URL. example: http://example.com/keyword/keyword-ideas.com
- Internal Linking – If all your links to other pages use anchor text like “click here” or “next page” guess what… You’re defiantly a newb. Use your keywords when linking to your pages.
- H1 Tag – Use keywords
- H2 Tag – Use keywords
- H3 Tag – If you don’t say “Use keywords” your a newb.
- Alt Text – By now we know you are an SEO newb, make sure your pictures have an alt text tag and that they use keywords. Remember the Google Bot doesn’t know that your image is a photo of a cat, you have to tell it.
This list is usually all an SEO newb can handle by them selves. I always offer them my services if they decide the really want to do some serious SEO.
If you feel you can handle a little more I found some other lists of Onsite SEO Tips:

As an SEO for local business I have found blogging to be a very useful tool. Now I understand that a lot of people do not believe that “Do Follow” blogs pass much link juice and are not worth your time. I have to disagree. While it should not be the only tool in your link building tool box it can be a very useful one.
In local SEO we are not usually trying to get thousands of links from huge authority sites, while this would be nice, our clients just don’t have the budget for it.
What blogs do offer to your client is an easy way to get some link juice with minimal effort. These links are usually on pages that relate to the keyword you are going after and some even allow you to chose your anchor text. Now when your biggest competitors have under 200 links, those blog comments start looking really nice.
The biggest problem I ran into in the past was finding blogs that do not use the rel=nofollow parameter in their comments section. Luckily I have found some amazing sources that help me get the link love from some good Do Follow blogs.
Comment Hunt is one of the best sources I have found allowing you to search for any keyword and it will return blogs that are (or were) Do-Follow. Because Comment Hunt searches through Google you should double check to make sure the blogs are still Do Follow.
Followlist.com advocates the Do Follow Blog Idea.
“How do you encourage people to comment on your blog posts? You give them something in return. You give them an outgoing link to their website, when they make a quality comment on your blog”
They also have a nice list of no follow blogs.
Here is a list of other sites I have found with useful blog lists.
The success you will have with a blog comment link building strategy depends on the quality of the blogs and the competition for your keywords. While I doubt anything I have said us revolutionary I think its an important step to any local SEO campaign.
